Swades (2004) is a Hindi film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker starring Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, and Sripriya. The film was an Official Selection for the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. The film is about Doctor Raghava Koothrapati (Shahrukh Khan), an Indian man who returns to his home country after years of living in the United States. He has come back because he wants to repay his debt to society—the debt that his father had incurred by educating villagers without charging them any fees. This debt is repaid by him coming back and taking up his father's job as a village doctor. He does this by establishing a hospital and teaching medicine to the villagers. He needs to teach, but he doesn't know how, which leads him to begin teaching his own medicine to a nearby village guru (Vikram). To help him learn about the medical needs of the village, he takes up a job as a junior doctor in an English-run hospital. Unfortunately for him, this is at night only. During the day, he must settle scores with corrupt bureaucrats, trying to fight for what's right without knowing how. The film was produced by Mahesh Bhatt, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, and the music composed by A. R. Rahman. The film was a critical success. It had received mostly positive reviews from critics, some praising the direction of Ashutosh Gowariker while some criticized it for being superficial. Sethi gave the film a rating of 6/10 at "India Today", having praised his performance in it while criticizing his personification of multiple roles in the film, writing that he had given one-dimensional characters that "had no shades or shades of grey". He further called it a "well-made film that simply fails to entertain" and wrote that "the ending is butchered". The film had an average opening of around 35 lakhs at the Indian box office. But later on, it started losing audience numbers. The film was expected to do better business in the long run, but due to its financial loss, Ashutosh Gowariker decided not to join any of his future projects with Shahrukh Khan. This led him to become a part-time director of television series ("Kumkum Bhagya") for Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms. The film score was composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar and Shabbir Ahmed. The soundtrack consists of 8 tracks. The song "Kaun Kaun" is sung by Shahrukh Khan, Mika Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, while the other songs are sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam. cfa1e77820
